The Sweet Exchange: Embracing Christ’s Righteousness

The Sweet Exchange: Embracing Christ’s Righteousness

Sermon preached on the 6th of April, 2025 by Bishop Justin Holcomb at St Peter the Fisherman, New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

Philippians 3:4b-14

The Futility of Self-Reliance for Justification:

Bishop Holcomb emphasizes the inadequacy of relying on personal achievements, heritage, or moral performance to justify one’s existence before God. He uses the example of Paul in Philippians 3, who considered his own credentials and accomplishments as loss compared to the righteousness found in Christ.

The Concept of Justification by Faith:

The sermon explains the theological concept of justification, where believers are declared righteous before God through faith in Jesus Christ. This is illustrated with the analogy of debt forgiveness and the deposit of Christ’s righteousness into the believer’s account, highlighting the transformative power of faith.

The Assurance and Comfort in Christ’s Righteousness:

Bishop Holcomb underscores the assurance and comfort that come from being found in Christ. He encourages believers to look to Christ rather than themselves for righteousness, emphasizing that faith is about trusting Jesus to save and provide rest and healing to the weary and burdened.
